A different name in a usage record is a reason to investigate. A useful model decision needs more context: where was the name observed, what can the account actually access, and how did the model perform on a defined task?

What a model identifier supplies

OpenAI’s model-listing API returns available models with identifiers and basic metadata such as ownership and creation time. The identifier is used to reference a model in API endpoints. That catalogue record has a specific purpose; a label in another product view should also be recorded with its source environment.

Keep a three-part comparison note

First, record the observed name, date and environment. Second, note the options accessible on the relevant account. Third, record a task, its conditions and its result. Without the third part, the note is a research lead rather than a completed performance comparison.

Attach results to their own conditions

For coding work, keep the starting files, instructions, tools and number of correction rounds. For mathematics, record the problem set and computation setting. A chart from a different experiment should retain its own identity instead of being attached to a similar-looking model name.

Milo’s assessment

Let’s put the options side by side. Names are easy to compare; the work is more useful. Separating identity, access and task results makes it clear what a new record actually adds to the decision. It also leaves a comparison that can survive the next round of changing names.
