Free, unlimited AI video: What’s the real cost?

A free generation can help you learn. A dependable production schedule asks a different question.

Conceptual cover created with AI.

“Use this model for free.” “Unlimited AI video, without paying.” If you are working with a small budget, those headlines are worth a look. Students, independent creators and people exploring a new craft should be able to try the tools before committing money.

But the offer needs a closer reading. Does “free” mean a genuine allowance, a short trial, or small allocations collected through changing accounts? Those routes do not give you the same production capacity, even when the headline makes them sound interchangeable.

That distinction matters when the work moves from experimenting to delivering. A practice scene can wait. A client’s Friday deadline usually cannot.

What does the free offer actually include?

An official free tier can be a useful way to assess a tool. Runway, for example, provides 125 one-time credits on its Free plan. They do not replenish after use. That is a limited trial, rather than a permanent supply of free generations. [1]

“Unlimited” also needs its conditions. Runway’s legacy Unlimited documentation describes slower generation and concurrency restrictions. Its extension for eligible existing subscriptions runs through 30 November 2026; it is not a new free offer available to everyone. [2]

When assessing a demonstration, check the exact model, account tier, output length, resolution, audio and waiting conditions. Finding the advertised model somewhere on a platform does not establish that the demonstrated route actually uses it.

We do not need to accuse an unidentified creator of deception to ask a reasonable question: can an ordinary viewer reproduce this result under the stated conditions?

The person demonstrating it may have different access

A presenter might have promotional credits, a commercial partnership or special access. We cannot establish that from the footage alone. YouTube requires creators to disclose sponsorships and other commercial relationships using its paid-promotion control. [3] A disclosure provides context; it does not by itself prove or disprove a product’s quality.

The useful comparison is between the access on screen and the access you can actually obtain. A convincing demonstration is not yet a purchasing plan.

Can 30 seconds really cost $6?

On 3 November 2026, Runway’s developer tariff lists Seedance 2.5 at 480p at 20 credits per output second; a credit costs $0.01. Without input or reference video, 30 output seconds total $6. Taxes, editing and other work are excluded. This is one provider’s API rate, not a universal price for a finished film. [4]

That last distinction has consequences. Generated footage might not provide the expression, hand movement or framing the scene needs. Further billed attempts, selection and editing can increase the resources required. We have not measured a model’s acceptance rate here; this is a distinction between raw output and work you can use.

For a professional project, cost belongs against the usable result. The number of generated seconds is only one part of the calculation.

Account juggling is a fragile production plan

Temporary email services and multiple accounts are not identical issues across every platform. What matters is the relevant offer and its rules. Runway, for instance, limits trial or promotional memberships to one per user unless the offer says otherwise, and provides for suspension when its terms are breached. [5]

An unspecified method should not simply be labelled illegal. Equally, a new email address should not be assumed to create permission for another allowance. For client work, a process that depends on repeatedly finding fresh accounts is difficult to treat as reliable capacity.

Time belongs in this calculation too. Suppose collecting credits, signing in and retrieving files takes 40 minutes. If you value your working time at an illustrative $12 an hour, those minutes represent $8. This is a hypothetical comparison, not a market wage or a cash expense. It makes the time visible.

None of that rules out free tools in professional work. A legitimate free service that meets the brief and provides sufficient continuity can be useful. The weakness is depending on an uncertain workaround while leaving its effort out of the budget.

Local alternatives already exist

Open-source and open-weight video generation is not merely a future possibility. Wan2.2 is an existing example, with Apache 2.0 licensing documented in its official repository. Its TI2V-5B local inference example specifies at least 24 GB of GPU memory with the stated memory-saving settings. That does not mean it will run on any laptop. [6]

Local generation can reduce dependence on per-clip cloud charges. It also puts hardware, electricity, installation, storage and maintenance on your side of the ledger. Renting a GPU replaces the purchase with a charge for its use. Whether either route is economical depends on the workload and equipment already available; this article is not a hardware buying recommendation.

Better models and competition may improve affordability. The timing and size of future price reductions remain uncertain. A delivery schedule still needs to work with the access available today.

Grant’s assessment

Good idea. Now let’s check the numbers. Give competing approaches the same small job: a few short scenes, an explicit quality requirement and a realistic time allowance. Record money spent, elapsed time, usable output and how easily you can produce another version. This is a proposed comparison, not a test we have performed.

Official free allowances can be valuable while learning. For recurring work, the question becomes whether the process supports the promise you have made to a customer. Developing drafts with a cheaper tool and reserving a more expensive model for necessary shots is one approach worth investigating.

The headline may get the first scene started. A sustainable workflow lets you return tomorrow and make the next one under conditions you understand.
